What (is a brain?)
Brain
Brain, noun: an organ of soft nervous tissue contained in the skull of vertebrates, functioning as the coordinating center of sensation and intellectual and nervous activity.
The brain makes up only 2% of total weight
The brain consumes 20% of oxygen and caloric intake
The Left Brain - Right Brain Theory
Left Brain
- Logic
- Language
- Critical Thinking
- Numbers
- Reasoning
Right Brain Houses
- Recognizing Faces
- Expressing Emotion
- Color
- Imagination
- Creativity
- Intuition
Who (has a brain?)
Every living being excluding plants has a brain, such as humans, animals and insects. Their are, however, many sea creatures and insects that do not have or need a brain to survive.
Where (do brains live?)
The brain is located inside the skull of mammals. The boney skull is meant to protect this vital organ.
When (does the brain develop?)
Brain Development Timeline
Womb
- The brain begins to develop 3 weeks after conception.
- Major parts of the brain are established and the central nervous system.
- Neuron production, migration and differentiation
Child
- During preschool years, a childs brain increases 4x.
- Major development in all areas of brain, prefrontal cortex is not yet developed
- By 3 memory develops
- By age 6, the brain is 90% of its adult volume
Teen
- Brain wiring is developing fatty covering called myelin that speeds up connections. It in frontal cortex later than the limbic system which is why teens are impulsive and make poor decisions
- Pruning of unused neurons continues
Young Adult
- Brain reaches peak power around 22 years and performs at maximum strength for about 5 years.
Adult
- After about 30 the brain begins exhibiting a downhill pattern
- The brain begins shrinking first in the prefrontal cortex (memory, planning, mood)
Old Age
- Brain continues to regress in weight, vasculature and cognition
- Loss of brain cells and neural networks in major part of brain especially in hippocampus (memory)
