Through the connections I made, especially with Deb and Dotty, who opened up and shared their story, their home and their chemo experience with me. Through research I found, that in an anxious situation, when someone is feeling panicky with a racing mind and heart, If they can slow their breath rate down, then they can physically slow their heart rate and make themselves feel less anxious. Refuge uses air bladders around the ribs to act as a tactile breath reminder as well as acoustic, noise canceling cotton in the hood so a quiet, peaceful moment can be achieved in any environment. So someone who feels anxious whether they are at home or at chemotherapy can turn on their Refuge device and feel a light, tactile breath reminder to slow their breath rate and have a quiet moment. It is an empowering feeling to be able to calm yourself down. The form was developed to be strong, flattering and fashion forward so the user feels confident, powerful and comfortable where ever they are. Cancer effects 8,000,000 people in the US alone. Treatment is extremely stressful on the body and the mind. As a designer I wanted to tackle a project much bigger than myself. It was extremely challenging finding people going through this disease to speak with and the most challenging part was empathizing with someone facing their mortality. Through extensive user research, including interviews with doctors, patients and caregivers, as well as learning about cancer from a biology standpoint, I set out to design a better experience.     Process Part 1: Qualitative Research with Patients and Caregivers After being connected with patients through a hospital blogger, I was overwhelmed with the response of people who wanted to help me with this project. It was important during this process to immerse myself the research in order to empathize to the best of my ability. Waiting for test results, waiting to undergo treatment, waiting for your doctor appointments, etc. One of the most prominent times of difficulty across the board was that going through something like cancer whether you are a patient or a caregiver, is trying to find a sense of calm during when everything seems to be falling around you. Doctors walked in and walked out spewing information about treatment and how they were going to fight Deb's cancer. Doctor's had their speeches and Deb and Dotty felt that is was very matter or fact and there was no room for questions or discussions.
